DES PLAINES, Ill., Dec. 19, 2016 – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that it will award scholarships to six chemical engineering students at the University of Cairo. The scholarships are part of the company’s investment in building engineering talent in Egypt and are funded by two of Honeywell’s businesses, Honeywell UOP and Honeywell Process Solutions. At the end of the current academic year, two of the students who receive scholarships will be selected for internships at Honeywell UOP’s research facilities in Chicago, and at Honeywell Process Solutions’ offices in Houston.
“Developing the next generation of scientific and research talent in Egypt is critical to both Honeywell and its customers,” said Jim Rekoske, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Honeywell UOP. “It is our pleasure to contribute to the advancement of Egypt’s oil refining, gas processing and petrochemical industries by providing these training opportunities.”
“We greatly appreciate Honeywell’s investment in our students and in our chemical engineering program,” said Prof. Dr. Fatma Ashour, Chairperson of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Cairo. “This training provides invaluable experience, and we look forward to expanding this program in the future.”
UOP’s role as the leading licensor of refining and petrochemical process technology to Egyptian companies began in the 1960s, with the licensing of various process technologies to Suez Oil Processing Company. Since that time, new UOP refining process units have come into operation, and are currently in operation, at Middle East Oil Refining Co. (MIDOR), Alexandria National Refining & Petrochemical Co., Amreya Petroleum Refining Co. (APRC), and Cairo Oil Refining Co. Egypt’s detergents industry – led by producers APRC and Egyptian Linear Alkyl Benzene Co. — relies on UOP linear alkylbenzene technology.
UOP provides the catalysts and adsorbents for the associated process units, as well as ongoing technical advisory services to the operations departments of these facilities. UOP is also active in Egypt’s natural gas processing industries, and has supplied technology and specialist process equipment to companies such as Khalda Petroleum Company, Abu Qir Fertilizers, and Badr Petroleum Company.
Honeywell Process Solutions established an office in Egypt in 1998, serving the refining, petrochemical, pulp and paper, and power generation industries. HPS is providing automation controls, integrated safety and security, process optimization diagnostics, and smart field instrumentation technologies to several Egyptian refinery companies, including Middle East Oil Refinery (Midor), Egyptian Refinery Co. (ERC) and Egyptian Ethylene & Derivatives Company (Ethydco).
